Description
The ivory Lega masks are associated with a specific ancestor whose memory remains very present, who lived several generations.
As an object of initiation it is employed during the paroxysmal rites of the Lutumbo lwa kindi initiations .It is “guarded” by an elderly kindi who is its custodian in the name of the kindi , living and dead, of a ritual community. In this group, it constitutes an element of cohesion and justice. The depth of the patina is of prime importance: even more than the age of the work, it testifies the frequency of its intensive use during initiation.
