Description

This fine old three-legged headrest originates from the Dinka tribe from Southern Sudan. They are a group of nomadic pastoralists. They are famous for the production of utilitarian and artistic objects including headrests. The variations among the headrests are as plentiful as their uses, they differ in accordance with age, gender, wealth and status of the user.

Such headrests were inspired by the aesthetics of cattle. The shape of this headrest is suggestive of the elegant horns of a cow. The legs taking the form of tubular columns. The owner of this headrest was a powerful man. It has a woven twisted leather as a handle. It was also used as a seat, with the convex platform resting on three vertical columns. This piece has a wonderful dark brown patina and shows signs of usage and old age.
