Description
The Lega are found in the virgin forest of eastern DRC, next to Luba people. Like nearly all art among the Lega, stools have a metaphoric use in the Bwami association, the primary secret society by which socio-political life is structured. Members at the level called Yananio keep their stools until death, at which time it is passed on to their replacement within Bwami. Stools designate status and represent the complete moral code of society. This stool is in good condition, though worn with age, and has evidence overall of old worm wear to the surfaces.
