This fine high backrest originates from the Maghbetu tribe in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Such pieces (high backrest) carved in human shape were reserved for chiefs only. They were of personal importance to the owner and showed status and prestige by the chiefs. This piece is carved from a piece of hard, heavy wood with an old brown patination. It displays the abstract shape of a woman, with a female figure on top of the rest, and neck and head with high crested coiffure in the upper section.
The elongated seat is finely carved to accommodate the back of the owner in a comfortable position. It rests on four columnar legs that provide stability. This is an old piece with good usage. It was finely finished and it is in good condition.
