Description
The Tetela are an ethnic group of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in the region between Lusambo and the Upper Congo River, in the provinces of Sankuru and Maniema. The tetela are associated with diviner-healers or witch doctors who used masks for funerals and marital celebrations. However, there was no evidence for the use of sculptures or masks among the tetela hence we could not ascertain the official use of this mask. This is a carefully carved mask from light wood and looks considerably old with a whitish patina.
